HOMEWORK POLICY

Homework is an opporunity for students to practice skills learned in class. It helps students to this end, and also helps teachers check to see if students have retained content. For these reasons, I do not believe that homework should be excessive. In fourth grade, students should not spend longer than 40 minutes doing their work (not including extra reading).

Occassionaly, students will bring home some work to finish that was not completed in class.

Each night, students should bring home a planner where they write down their homework. In addition, they will have a folder for any items that need to come home. One side of the folder is for items for you and the other is for homework items. If there are any items that need to be signed and returned (field trip forms, pink, yellow slips, etc.), please sign and send them to school with your child as soon as possible.

HOMEWORK

Math

Math homework will be assigned by either me, Ms. Kelly, or Ms. Odenthal, depending on which math class a student has been placed. In my class, students will generally have a page of Study Links to do. The book will come home each night. Otherwise, students may have a worksheet to complete or a project. Students should try to complete work on their own as much as possible. BUT, if work has taken students to a frustration level, then they should stop and instruction should be adjusted in school to accomodate for this.

Other times, projects may be assigned. Students should work on these in their own time and complete them by the assigned due date.

Reading

Students are expected to read for 30 minutes (with a few exceptions) each night. Fourth grade is a critical year in terms of reading, students are shifting from "learning to read" to "reading to learn" and must make a habit of reading often and at their level. Please encourage students to read a variety of texts at home. Students will also receive assignments that they must complete using their Reader's Workshop book. Those will be written down on a case by case basis in their planners.
